Why I created this community... [Aug. 12th, 2006|01:28 pm]
What, and who, is going down in Humboldt County. U
I started this community when I realized that we couldn't have a decent discussion in the Rants and Raves section of Craiglist. The irritating format finally got to me. IMO, that site has the most interesting HumTalk around, and I wanted to expand on that without the rules and restrictions of some of the other local communitites. So, thanks Shanty Mike, your story got me hooked on local gossip!

What's the story behind that?

Re: Shanty

Apparently someone pissed at Shanty Mike accused him of being a sex offender listed on the Megans Law website. And, apparently, he isnt one. Sucks to be him. Fucking lame thing to call someone. Whatever happened to the good old days where we just put baloney on somones car when they pissed us off?

Re: OOOOOH What a Graet Idea

I know for a fact that no one that works at the Shanty is a sex offender. What is the problem? Some jack ass got kicked out and started all this shit and no one wants to verify the facts but try to ruin some "joes" life. Good call. I hope you never fall in this light, these are very serious acusations and they need to stop.

is this a place for the bashers and haters to come spew, or a refuge away from them for others ?

what is obscene?

i look at cragslist and see these horrific and graphic pics of death, maiming, gore...to me, that is obscene. of course cragslist is not the only place i happen upon it.

when i see it, i feel grateful and humbled. i know my fer shit life could be so much worse.

so, obscene. would you rather a child accidentally happen to see people in lude sexual encounters or see people who are hacked, burned, blown up, bloody and gorey...

what is going to have a greater impact on a young mind?

my only child is 32. being a nice little hippie mommy and against violence, i never let him play with guns when he was a kid. well, when he turned 7 or 8, everything he drew was guns, blood, bullets flying, people being shot. talk about me freaking out! so, i learned thru that about balance with raising kids. when he was in his early teens, the hubby and i began teaching him gun saftey and we all enjoyed target shooting.

to this day, he has no interest in guns. and although i gave him no kind of formal religious training, hoping he would one day be able to search and find his own God/Goddess/Spirit/Creator...he ended up very christian and very anti-violence. very anti-war. he is almost lennonesque or ghandish. i like it.

well, when he was 12, he came home from school and did his usual routine of using the bathroom, 1st thing.

well, the hubby came home from work about an hour later. he had about the same use-the-bathroom-when-ya-get-home routine...(i think we all do??)...lol...anyway...

i went to the bathroom sometime after hubby, and found a Wisconsin Trails magazine sitting there, fine reading material. i opened it up and out popped a Hustler magazine. The Hustler was nestled into the middle of the larger Wisconsin Trails mag. and it was a REALLY nasty version of it, too (a woman doing unspeakable things to a bear)...well, hubby and i enjoyed such things, way back then...

i took the mag to the hubby and said "what didja do this for, hide this mag in this other mag..."...he had no idea what i was talking about. then it dawned on us both that the boy who would be man had found out porno stash! GAWD...time for another talk...

anyway, as nasty as that Hustler was, well, the shit i'm seeing now, the pics of the horror and gore and dead bodies, if they are fortunate enough to be dead...they do not compare to anything larry flint gave us.

do these images of gore make us more hardened and heartless towards man-kind? numb to it?

know, too, i was born in the 50's and our generation was the 1st one to actually see graphic pictures of injured, dead and mutilated people in vietnam and cambodia every night on the 6pm news. it hurt me then and it still is painful.
soooo...time for bed here, w/o any Hustler mags :)

but...who has an opinion about all this?

I'm somewhat new around humboldt. Been here a couple years, but have travelled much of the time. Being 28, single and well-travelled I happen to find the shanty one of the only places I can meet interesting & like minded friends. I'm not gay, a freak (well maybe I shouldn't be so quick to say that) or a tweaker.

well, ya should have known...

...that closeted freak would come in here too. i feel bad for him, all those pent up feelings and no guts to just live his life. the closet can be a pretty scary place, after all. buddy, just open up the damn door and walk into the light~

when i 1st come to this fine town 7 yrs ago, i was told that the shanty was gay-friendly, but they didn't allow girl-girl or boy-boy kissin or PDOA. i have only been there once for a chili cook-off benefit..(was it 1999? hmmmm,) and it seemed like an ok place to me. i'm just not a person to go to bars nor am i a drinker. i am, however, way gay...anyway...

here is my scenario of why the closet case has a ragging hard on against the shanty...

i think closet case went on into the shanty a few times, hoping to pick up some nice boy butt for a quickie...and i imagine his mouth got the better of him, and not in a sexual way, in a mean way, and they 86'd his ass and put him out to the curb like trash...

thus began the shanty slam we are enduring. since his focus has been this mike person, maybe the person who finally asked closet case to scram was named mike?

i really try hard to kill people with kindness. when i encounter verbal bashers (thank the gods i've not meet any bashers who were more than verbal!) i try to let them see that i am the same as they are and just want the same things out of life they themselves do. no more and no less. i've had good results doing this. seems like if you don't feed into their shit, it takes the wind out of their sails...

i think closet case sits at home and drinks a little too much so that he can muster the courage to be his true ass-hole self...and if he is married, (oh man) he closes his eyes tight and imagines she is a he...

i bet she is just disgusted to see what she ended up with at this point...

so, now i've poked him and bashed him. *sigh* i have been biting my tongue since he started his crap...not wanting to blow any wind up his skirt ;)

when people are really frustrated and know they are not being listened to, some tend to act out. i don't want that...

how is that for getting gossip up n running? LOL

LOVE IT! And what the hell is up with them not allowing PDA? SERIOUSLY???

don'tcha know...

here is how it was explained to me when i moved here...the owners of the shanty were 2 lesbian woman, i don't know if it is still under the same ownership... & that most of their regular clientel are old(er) str8 people. (i'm 49 so you have some idea what i consider "older") and i guess them old folks are not appreciative any PDA. that the old school thinkin, i imagine.

here is even more conjecture...perhaps they discourage PDA because there are people like closet case who bash gays, and the ban on PDA ws devised to keep potentially dangerous people like closet case from loosing it and hurting someone. hey, there are a lot of closet cases out there.

i am very open minded. AND extreemly neurotic. when my "partnered" same sex friends are kissing in public it makes very nervous and concerned for their safety. perhaps hand-holding and hugging will pass, but kissing seems to be over the top for some. (i also feel weird when i see hetro couples neckin in public. and a quick peck is not what i consider PDA).

for a while things were a little more relaxed, and peole started to view diversity as a positive thing for our society. then our nations highest ranked political leader (breeder;) started his gay bashing, and is attempting to write hatred and discrimination into the constitution, that being solely and entirely directed to same sex couples and families, and this allowed the gay bashers to feel validated in their hatred & fear of gays. i believe that was the catalist that started the cycle of gay bashing we are seeing now.

maybe soon we can discuss how we ALL, gay and str8 alike, have had our basic civil rights erroded rather quickly, in the name of "national security"...

how big of a can of worms are we willing to open here? lol
wordy one

Re: don'tcha know...

Hmm. I've never heard the argument that people might be comcerned for thier safety. Not being sarcastic, its something that never occured to me. Sad that some people might have to consider this in their day-to-day lives.

Estimates of the numbers of gays and lesbians in any typical group or population range from 2-10%. If accurate, that would mean there are approximately 8-27 million gay and lesbian Americans and millions more who have gay or lesbian relatives, friends, neighbors, or colleagues.

In the six-year period between 1990 and 1996, the FBI recorded more than 25,000 gay bashing incidents in the U.S., and this number is on the rise.
(National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 1996)

More than 2,550 incidences of anti-gay harassment and violence were reported in 16 U.S. cities in 1998. (National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 1999)

Nearly all (94%) of gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals report being victims of some kind of harassment. Forty-four percent report having been threatened with physical violence. Nearly one in five report having been punched, hit, kicked, or beaten at least once in their lives because of their sexual orientation.. (National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, 1998)

The most frequent sites of anti-gay incidents are schools and workplaces.
(Dr. Karen Franklin, 1998)

More than 22% of gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth skipped school because they felt unsafe, compared to 4.2% of their heterosexual peers. Forty-six percent of gay lesbian and bisexual youth attempted suicide compared with 8.8% of their heterosexual peers. (Massachusetts Department of Education, 1997)

Twenty-six percent of adolescent gay males report having to leave home as a result of conflicts with their family over their sexual orientation. Forty-two percent of homeless youth self-identify as gay or lesbian. (Pediatrics, 1987; Traveler's Aid, 1991 - GLSEN)

and never forget Matthew Shepard. He was the young man who was tortured, beaten and left for dead, hung upon a fence post in Wyoming. His murderers said they beat him to death because he was gay and hitting on them in a bar.

All evidence proved they were out to "kill a queer" that night and this shy, quiet 5'2" college student, matthew, was an easy mark.

not long after i moved to cali in '99, a man in redding was beaten to death and his home and body burned. the men who were prosecuted for it said they did it because they didn't like fags.
a last week a gay man in san diego was beaten to death...because he was gay.
i have pride stickers viewable on every side of my car. i call my car "the pride ride". i have never been harassed in this area at any time for any reason. i feel fortunate to be living here, but i also think i have a false sense of security.

yeah, there are gay people being beat up, harassed and killed, just because they are gay. *sigh*
